Sustainable PNNL - Balancing social, environmental, and economic needs for a more sustainable future

Pollution Prevention

Our Pollution Prevention (P2) Program is dedicated to helping staff prevent or minimize all types of pollutants, including air emission, liquid effluents, and solid waste. The program also looks for opportunities for resource conservation, recycling, and purchasing environmentally preferable products and services.

Our goals are to:

  • Divert at least 50% of non-hazardous solid waste, including food and compostable material but not construction and demolition material and debris, annually, and pursuing opportunities for net-zero waste or additional diversion opportunities
  • Divert at least 50% of non-hazardous construction and demolition materials and debris

In FY2016, PNNL met the non-hazardous waste diversion goal and diverted 54% of non-hazardous sanitary waste from landfills through recycling and composting. PNNL expanded paper, aluminum, and plastic recycling by placing recycling bins in approximately 40 laboratory spaces. We also added new items to begin recycling.
